The Douglas County Sentinel (requires registration) is reporting today that Douglas County Commission Chairman Tom Worthan is seeking reelection for another four year term, representing the Republican Party.

If you haven’t heard by now, Douglasville Mayor Mickey Thompson was reelected yesterday by a margin of 535 votes. Several media outlets are reporting the results.

House Speakers Property Taxes Goes Up

The Atlanta Journal and Constitution is reporting today that Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson, an advocate of eliminating property taxes, received a shock in the mail when his property taxes went up. “Property taxes on his Paulding County home and business shot up about 25 percent. In Douglas County, where seven acres of mostly kudzu that he owns were reappraised, the tax bill more than doubled. Combined, his taxes shot up by a third.”

Douglas County relies on property taxes to help out with infrastructures, and most notably will foot the $120 million that is needed to build the new jail unless alternative funding can be produced.What would Douglas County do without property taxes?

Absentee Voting for Municipalities

The Douglas County Sentinel (requires registration) is reporting today that filing for absentee ballots for the cities of Douglasville and Villa Rica begin tomorrow. Voters living in those municipalities can stop by the Voters Registration Office at the Douglas County Courthouse, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., excluding Veterans Day. Positions of races are below.
