Losing Georgia: Interactive Tour

Losing Georgia: The Interactive Tour is an entirely new way to view not only the growth, but the history of Douglas County, Georgia by seeing the results on a broad perspective using Google Earth. See interesting patterns and trends across the four districts of the county and within the ever expanding city limits of Douglasville. Each development’s location is documented including available pictures and key information like the developer, home builders, facilities, acres and more. Educate yourself about the history of Douglas County with photographs, locations of historical sites and historic maps. Learn about communities that residents live in today, as well as those communities of the past.

Developments
Developments - Discover all the real estate developments throughout Douglas County from an aerial perspective. See how much land is being depleted and what surrounding areas are being effected. The developments have been categorized into three sections: Commercial, Residential, and Other. Each section is then broken down by district to better locate a certain development.

Photos
Photos - Besides the photos that are in the development section, included are more photos around developments that peak certain interests. From Google Earth’s aerial view to on-the-ground photography, view the changes that have occurred to the landscape that is not present in Google Earth.

Overlays
Overlays - See developments in an entirely different way by viewing a development’s demographic overlayed upon the 3-D terrain. Control the amount of transparency to see a transition of now and what is to inhabit that area in the coming days. Gain access to various site plans for developments and County\City maps for Zoning, Future Land Use, Districts and more.

Historic
Historic Places - Uncover the lost treasures that are becoming endangered by the continual push for urban sprawl. From the old community court houses that governed law to the grist mills that were powered by local creeks and streams, discover the most comprehensive historical map of Douglas County ever created. Included is the award winning Cemteries of Douglas County, Georgia.

Historic Maps
Historic Maps - View maps as far back as 1831 from the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, which includes former Campbellton County. Locate old communities and how Douglas County has changed over the past 100 years.

Communities
Communities - Learn about the history of current communities and those of the past, featured on historical maps that are no longer incorporated. Defining the importance of all communities is important for the future of Douglas County.

School System
School System - All public schools, both current and future locations, have been documented and can be viewed with ease. Information provided includes school name, address, principal, grade levels, phone and fax numbers.

WSA Facilities
WSA Facilities - Ever wonder where our water comes from and where it goes? Now you can see where all the WSA facilities are located in Douglas County. Some addresses are provided with general information and how many million gallons per day.

Download Interactive Tour

  1. You must have Google Earth to view the Interactive Tour. If you do not have Google Earth, it is free and available here.
  2. Download the Losing Georgia: Interactive Tour Network Link
  3. If you haven’t done so, locate and open the KMZ file.
  4. Once a connection has been made to the server, expand the file by clicking the “+” sign.
  5. I suggest turning on the following options in Google Earth located in the Layers panel: terrain, roads, borders.
