Douglas: Wind Damage and Funnel Cloud Seen

Published March 7th, 2008

WSBTV reports Saturday morning that at least three houses had walls collapse from the winds created by the storm. Approximately 10-12 houses in the mega-residential development Brookmont sustained damage.

From the Associated Press:
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — Officials say a strong storm tore through suburban Atlanta, ripping the roof off a grocery store and sending trees crashing onto homes.

Douglas County spokesman Wes Tallon says an employee at the Kroger outside Douglasville broke an arm when the store’s walls and ceiling collapsed during the Friday night storm. Weather officials say the storm only lasted 10 minutes, but it was enough time to shatter windows, damage roofs and tear up vehicles.

The storm system weakened as it traveled in a northeastern direction across the state, said Shirley Lamback with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Fox 5 Atlanta is reporting that the National Weather Service has confirmed that a mini-supercell tornado hit the Kroger, which collapsed portions of the roof and supporting walls while rocks from the roof became projectiles that flew into neighboring houses.

From 11Alive.com

At least one person was reported hurt in Douglasville after severe storms blew through west Metro Friday evening.

The storms blew into west Metro Atlanta suddenly, with tornado warnings issued at varying points for Carroll, Douglas, Paulding and Cobb counties, shortly after 8 p.m.

There are reports of at least one person injured at a Kroger store on Chapel Hill Road south of Arbor Place Mall that sustained wind damage. At that location, at least one air conditioner unit blew off of the top of the building. Cars in that parking lot suffered damage, and some trees blew down.

There are other reports of homes damaged in at least two Douglasville subdivisions.

According to fire officials in Douglasville, there was a funnel cloud sighted aloft, but they said it did not touch the ground.

National Weather Service investigators will visit Douglasville on Saturday to survey the damage, and to make a determination as to what type of storm caused the damage.

There are some accounts that the emergency storm sirens came on after the storm had already passed, with the Kroger already sustaining damage. No one is allowed to enter the store or surrounding merchants as emergency personnel are still on the scene as of this report. Power is out at the Kroger, but not the surrounding area.

The Kroger at Chapel Hill Road was recently completely renovated.

Yep, I’ve been hearing sirens up and down the main road near my house (Stewart Mill Rd.) since the Loudspeaker Siren ended.

I heard from some friends that the damage was quite severe, and the storm crept up on the country VERY quickly, and quietly.
