The Atlanta Journal and Constitution is reported last night that the man that injured a Brinks courier guard was 41 year old David Broderick of Stone Mountain. Broderick is a self-employed businessman who runs CD Showplace, an online store that specializes in displaying CDs on walls for decorative art. A white van that Broderick rented was recovered at the mall and a list of charges is mounting, including aggravated assault. Broderick was still listed in stable, but critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Last month’s community poll asked the question of whether Losing Georgia should continue. A majority of votes, 73% out of 106, catered for the Project to carry on. For the entirety of 2+ years, Losing Georgia has been the byproduct of my selfish work habits to describe a story of a growing community in the shadow of metro Atlanta.
Like an unfinished painting, Losing Georgia is a piece of art taking on different colors to explore a defining picture. Starting out with following new development to digging up forgotten history, there is always a story to tell. That is why today I am rolling out a new effort to help expand the Project with your help.
You voted for Losing Georgia to continue and here’s your chance to do it personally. Over the past few weeks I have had people e-mail me on how to help out, wanting to submit photographs and articles about a story that they want out. Already posted by contributors are work from Michael Moore and Sebastian Llano.
So here’s the question: what does the term “Losing Georgia” mean to you?
Is it the loss of the Southern hospitality and culture that once was prevalent? The loss of history and sense of place? A community growing up too fast too soon? Or is it something personal?
I am asking for your stories because, frankly, I’m all out of storytelling from the past two years and opening up this webumentary to the community. Topics do not have to be about Douglas County, but about Georgia itself. Take in the emotion, breathe with your eyes and the story will tell itself.
Send your work to contribute@losinggeorgia.com
Guidelines
- paragraphs between 2-5 sentences
- photographs optional, but welcome

The Douglas County Sentinel (requires registration) is reporting today about the Arbor Place Mall shooting that included a Brinks courier guard and the shooter. The news is fairly old since it relies on yesterdays press conference. Apparently the guard was leaving as shots rang out near the food court. Exchanging gun fire, the guard took a bullet in the leg while placing two rounds into the suspect. Both men were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, the guard was released Monday evening while the suspect is in critical condition.
The AP press release is posted after the jump. Also check out AJC.com.

Breaking news coming out of Douglas County today as two armed men attempted to rob a Brinks Security armored truck just before noon. The shooting occurred near the Johnny Rockets at the back side mall entrance at Regal Cinemas. A Brinks Security guard took a shot in the leg, but was able to fire back at the assailant by placing two rounds in the chest and neck area. Both men were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. A second suspect that is intended to be the getaway driver is still on the loose.
Arbor Place Mall went immediately into lockdown as local law enforcement and SWAT teams moved in to do a sweep of the area. Schools in the vicinity of the mall were put on “code yellow”, meaning all students were moved inside and exterior doors were secured.

This maybe old news, but for those RSS readers there is a new community poll up: Can Douglas County go Green? With the historical north Georgia drought grudgingly continuing, questions about environmental resources like water and fuel are sure to increase. Green energy has seen little success in the county and the advent of more could be possible. For instance, the award winning visitors center at Sweetwater Creek State Conservancy Park is a role model for understanding the measures of consuming natural resources to their full extent while having a aesthetically working facility.

The Douglas County Sentinel (requires registration) reported yesterday that Tanner Health System broke ground on Thursday for a new 42-bed behavioral health hospital in Villa Rica. The $14.5 million facility will be the first of its kind in the West Georgia region and the first behavioral hospital in over 20 years to be built in the state of Georgia. It will be located off of Highway 61 in Carroll County on Tanner Health System land.

Barns are the relics of a workmanship’s past, the symbolic covenant of a farm that families relied on for living. Still scattered throughout Douglas County, although not as prevalent as in the days of long ago, barns can been seen in the rural areas and on the doorstep of urban culture. This barn once stood on the grounds at Boundary Waters Park before it was torn down from a state of disrepair and danger.
What Goes Into the Price
The price is determined by the amount of time prepping for the photograph – i.e. scouting for location, recognizing timing, studying weather patterns – setting up the shot, post-processing of image, and printing of image.
A five dollar flat rate for shipping is added to the price to take care of the purchasing shipping materials in order the photograph to make a safe trip. Losing Georgia uses USPS and FedEx for shipment.
